Lucia K. Maher
I’m an American journalist and consultant for the World Bank with a focus in economics and business. I regularly edit manuscripts, studies, journal articles, books, and book chapters, as well as teaching material such as case studies, technical notes, and teaching notes for economists, business school professors, and graduate students.
My clients’ research is extremely rigorous and impactful. Their work is frequently published in top academic journals such as the Journal of Financial Economics and the Journal of Finance and has been featured in top media including the Financial Times, The Economist, and The New York Times. I am fully fluent in The Chicago Manual of Style and The Associated Press Stylebook, and well-versed in copy editing according to publication-specific style guides.
While I was born and raised in Washington D.C., I chose to study a dual-degree in Philosophy and Journalism at the Universidad de Navarra in Pamplona, Spain. Completely bilingual in English and Spanish, I first experienced editing academic manuscripts as an undergraduate student for PhD candidates at the University.
From there, I worked four years as an editor and communications officer at top-ranked IESE Business School in Barcelona, Spain. In this capacity, I would regularly rework professors’ writing to make it clearer, more streamlined, and altogether stronger sounding.
Apart from working as a freelance academic editor, I’m a consultant for the Jobs Division of the World Bank, where I edit economists’ evidence-based manuscripts to ensure that the final product is ready for publication. I do so by pinpointing non-sequiturs, proposing structural changes to improve overall readability, ensuring the storyline is coherent and clear, revising tables/graphs for clarity and consistency, and verifying that bibliographical references are properly cited.
